Tops on, please

At Portside, we want our gyms to feel welcoming, comfortable, and approachable for everyone who walks through the door.
Over time, we’ve noticed more shirtless climbing in the gyms, especially during busy periods. While that might not seem like a big deal to some people, feedback from staff and community members suggests it can change the feel of the space for others.
Because of that, all climbers and gym users are required to wear a shirt or top while inside the venue. The policy applies equally to everyone, including staff. A top can be anything that covers the upper half of your body, including but not limited to:
Vest
Sports Bra
Crop Top
Singlet
T-Shirt
Jumper
People come to Portside for all sorts of reasons. Some are here to train hard, some are brand new to climbing, some are hanging out with mates after work, and others are just looking for a space that feels good to spend time in. We want as many people as possible to feel comfortable being here.

Questions
Does this apply to everyone?
Yes. The policy applies to all gym users, including staff.
Will this affect climbing performance?
For the vast majority of climbers, wearing a lightweight shirt or singlet won’t meaningfully impact performance. Most indoor climbing gyms around Australia and internationally already operate with similar policies.
Why introduce the policy?
We want Portside to feel welcoming and comfortable for a wide range of people, including newer climbers, families, younger climbers, and longtime community members. This policy helps support the atmosphere we want across our spaces.
I disagree with the policy. Who can I speak to?
You’re welcome to chat with our team or contact us directly with respectful feedback or questions.
Thanks for helping us look after the spaces and community we all share.
