Our Setting and Grading Philosophy

Our approach to progression
Climbing's rich history teaches us that the essence of the sport lies not in chasing grades but in the enduring commitment to personal challenges. Historically, climbers returned again and again to the same outdoor boulders, dedicating themselves to challenges that might never be conquered, finding beauty and purpose in that very process.
At Portside, we believe climbing is about the journey. Progress isn't about ticking boxes or chasing numbers - it's about growing your skills, overcoming personal challenges, and finding joy in the movement.
We acknowledge that indoor climbing culture often emphasises grade-chasing, which can lead to unnecessary frustration. It’s not the grade that gives climbing meaning; it’s the commitment, patience, and heart you bring to each climb.
That's why our grading colours deliberately overlap, encouraging you to explore climbs based on curiosity and personal ambition, shifting the focus away from external validation to personal fulfilment.
How it works
We understand that grades can be limiting if they're viewed as a value judgment, and that's exactly what we want to avoid. Our grading system is designed to be a general guide rather than a rigid standard.
Our climbs are marked with coloured tags that each represent a general level of climbing, with two additional tag designs for Mystery and Kids’ climbs.
