For the few years we’ve held our birthday event, the daytime vibes were fun, but the energy was scattered throughout the entire day. As we’ve grown older, so has our understanding of what “growing older” means. This time around, we wanted to recreate the feel of an old-school disco, but reimagined in our way. Something completely different than what we’ve ever done before.

As the sun went down and the moment we turned off the “big” lights, our reactions were instantly just…“wow”. With the projector lighting up the whale tail, deep violet, blue and pink spotlights shining across the walls, the soft lit yoga-room-turned-photo-gallery, and festoon lights in the gym area, it was like we’d entered a whole ‘nother space. The disco ball added that bit of extra razzle dazzle that we were all hoping for. The turnout was massive, with our RSVP list maxing out in only 4 days! Next year, we’ll leave it more open so that more of our community can come and join in.

Activities

R is for Rusty

We struck up a collab with Rusty after our pals at Patagonia introduced us. As it turned out, many of them were already climbers (surprise, surprise).

After chatting with Rusty, we realised that so many things just made sense. We both started from small beginnings, and we both cared strongly about keeping things real and relatable.

One thing you’ve probably noticed is how many interesting sub-cultures the bouldering community has overlapping with each other. We’ve noticed heaps - chess, gaming, woodworking, magic, crafting to name a few. Skate and surf were no exception at all – and that’s where our collaboration idea was born.

The tee represents a blend of surf, skate and climbing culture, with the outcrop rooted in the sandy stone of WA’s coast.

Rusty even came down and joined us with their vinyl heat press on the night.

We had plenty of faces, friends, new and old, show up to the birthday bash. There was even a huge group from Joondalup who rocked up with matching Christmas shirts, which was fun. We saw O’Connor regulars, staff, and newer members of the community turning up to climb and hang out in the beer garden, and our resident DJ / Head Setter Will on the decks made sure the tunes were going, and vibes were immaculate.
